I’m a motorcyclist at heart, so I’ve been riding bikes for almost as long as I can remember.

When I was little, I would ride my dirt bike around the woods for hours on end without ever wanting to stop. As I got older, my bikes changed, but my love of riding never did.

Over all these years, I’ve always had a standard helmet. However, recently, I was turned onto the O’Neal Commander Bluetooth Helmet, and I have to say, I was blown away.

Even though I know technology is advancing more every day, I guess I didn’t realize that it would come into helmets as well. But, this being the 21st century and all, I suppose I shouldn’t be that surprised.

How to Choose a Motorcycle Helmet

Even though Bluetooth is a great option to have, there are a lot of other factors that should be taken into account before buying a new helmet. Here are the top things to look for when making your decision.

Size

When it comes to comfort and safety, size does matter. Before getting a helmet, you should try it on to see how it feels.

If you do most of your shopping online (like me), then trying it on isn’t an option, but you should still make sure that the helmet you get is rated for your head size.

If you’re not sure what your head size is, take a string, wrap it around the longest and widest point of your head (forehead, ears, back of the head) and then measure that length on a ruler or measuring tape.

Too small, and it will pinch and feel like a vice. Too big, and it could rattle around or slide off while riding, making it worthless.

Safety Rating

In the US, all motorcycle helmets must be rated by the Department of Transportation before they are sold to the public. While DOT ratings are sufficient, if you want the best of the best, look for the SNELL logo. SNELL is a foundation that is dedicated to the rigorous testing of helmets to ensure that they are the best.

However, while DOT certification is required by law, a SNELL rating is completely voluntary, so you won’t see it on a lot of helmets.

According to the manufacturer, the range is 119 feet, which is about forty yards.

Yes, you can recharge the battery. I would recommend doing it whenever you’re not using the helmet. Treat it as you would your smartphone.

How is the sound?

Thankfully, the sound is pretty good, all things considered. The clarity is something I was worried about, but I can hear everything well, including GPS directions.

Final Verdict

Since I got the oneal helmets, riding has never been the same. While I would never advise taking a call while on the road (pull over to the side, dummy), I do love the fact that I can hook up my phone’s GPS or Mp3 player.

There’s nothing like getting directions right in your ear as you ride, although I mostly use it for music.

One time, I rode with a buddy of mine who also has a Bluetooth compatible helmet. We were able to talk to each other, which was pretty cool at first, but then we realized that there’s not much to talk about on the road.

Also, the range for the intercom is pretty small, so that’s kind of a bummer. Otherwise, I love the o neal bluetooth helmet.
